Enzymes and sucrose breakdown Flashcards
Enzymes
-Substances, proteins or sometimes RNA that speeds up a biochemical reaction by modifying specific substances called substrates
-Allow reactions to happen fast at normal body temp
-Facilitate molecular interaction
substance an enzyme acts upon
Substrate
Sucrose breakdown
1 Substrate approaches active site on enzyme molecule
2 it binds to active site forming enzyme substrate complex (lock and key fit)
3 enzyme breaks covalent bonds between monomers in substrate
enzyme remains unchanged and is ready to repeat process
Suitable temp for enzymes to function properly
37 degrees
if its above or below that then it affects the chemical bonds in the active site and make them less suited to bind substrates
