Lifting From Open Water Flashcards
Examples from when lifting from open water may have to happen?
When hydrant supply is insufficient
When there is no hydrant supply
What is the theoretical maximum hight water can be lifted?
And what is the maximum practical height it can be lifted?
10m
And
8m
What factors effected the maximum lifting height of 10meters to be achieved?
OF PITA
Overcoming inertia (getting water moving initially)
Friction loss (in hard suction hose)
Pump entry loss (water reaching impeller)
Imperfect vacuum
Temperature. (Warmer the water, the harder to lift)
Atmospheric pressure. (Higher you are, the less atmospheric pressure pushing down on water forcing it up hose)
Atmospheric pressure at sea level?
1 bar
What is a primer, in a centralfugal pump?
A device that can pump air and gas.
How far below the surface much a strainer be?
At least 300mm (3 times hose diameter)
Avoids sewing air into hose
Safety considerations when pumping from open water?
All staff made aware of dangers
Personal floatation devices to be worn if any risk of falling in
Make sure appliance is on safe ground
Make allowances if pumping from tidal source
At night set up lighting
Open water can be source of disease.
Clean any contaminated equipment
What does a reading of 0.3 bar on vacuum side of compound gauge indicate?
A lift of approx 3 meters.
0.1 bar for every meter on compound gauge
Mesured from eye of impeller inlet to surface water. (Not hose under water)
Causes of compound gauge showing a decreased vacuum reading?
Level of supply raised. (Tidal)
Branches closing
Slight air leak on suction side of pump. (In hard suction hose)
Causes of compound gauge showing increase in vacuum pressure?
Water source dropping. (Tidal, or supply used up)
Suction strainer blocked
Branches opening. (Pump working harder)
First delivery hose
If the pump fails to achieve a lift, and NO reading on vacuum side of compound gauge, what should be considered the reasons why?
Suction strainer may not be submerged enough
Loose or faulty suction joints
Open drain plug on pump casing
Delivery valve not seating correctly
Air leak in suction hose
Defective seals
Serious leak in pipes or connections to gauges
Defective primer
Compound gauge damper closed. (Not working correctly)
Pump fails to achieve lift and a very HIGH reading on compound gauge causes?
Blocked suction strainer
Faulty suction hose
Which pumps can be used to lift from open water?
LLP light portable pump
Mercedes fire appliance. Godiva World Series
What is a salvage sheet?
Placed between bank and had suction hose to prevent damage
What type of primer does a Godiva World Series pump have?
Automatic positive displacement reciprocating piston pump
OF PITA?
Over coming inertia. (Water going form station to moving)
Friction loss
Pump entry loss. (Water reaching impeller)
Imperfect vacuum. (Lots of components etc)
Temperature. (Hot water is harder lift, can out lift ice)
Atmospheric pressure. (Less atmospheric pressure at a higher height)
Type of primer on Godiva World Series?
Automatic positive displacement reciprocating position primer
How can engagement of the primer be easily recognised?
Chattering noise
Describe the hard suction hose?
2.44 m long
100mm inner diameter
Connected using threaded couplings
Made to withstand external pressure.
Fitted with internal washer at female end
What is the 140-100 adaptor?
Adaptor that allows the 100mm suction hose to connect to 140mm pump inlet
What position should the tank to pump switch be in when lifting water?
Closed.
Other wise large amounts of water will flow out of pump inlet when cap is removed
All deliverers and hosereel switches must be closed before lifting water.
.
What is the most important factor in obtaining and keeping a lift?
Preventing air from getting into hose or pump.
Crackling jets can indicate a small amount of air that has gotten into hose then pump.
What would a reading of -0.1 indicate on compound gauge?
Lift of one meter.
Max is 1.0 (10m lift)
If more jets were opened and being used whilst lifting water, what would the compound gauge show?
An increased reading. -0.1 to -0.2 for example.
Pump is working harder
What is priming?
Removing air from suction hose and pump, creating a vacuum to remove atmospheric pressure from hose, allowing water to be lifted.
