Life On Earth Definitions Flashcards
Ecosystem
An ecosystem consists of all the living organisms living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact.
Biome
Biomes are regions of our planet which have similar flora, fauna and climate, the distribution of biomes depended on factors such as temperature and rainfall.
Biotic factor
A biotic factor is a living component which can affect the organisms which can live within the ecosystem; and so affect biodiversity.
Abiotic factor
An abiotic factor is a non-living component which can affect the organisms which can live within the ecosystem; and so affect biodiversity.
Niche
A niche is a role an organism plays within a community.
Population
A group of organisms of the same species found in an ecosystem.
Community
All the plants, animals and microorganism that can live in an ecosystem.
Habitats
The places where organisms live:
Food chain
A food chain is a diagram which shows the movement of energy between organisms in an ecosystem.
Producers
Producers are organisms can make their own food for energy by photosynthesis.
Consumers
Consumers are organisms that get their energy by eating other organisms. They can be secondary or tertiary.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity can be described in terms of the different number of species, genes and ecosystems in a region.
