Cells, Tissues And Organs Flashcards
What are specialised cells?
Cells which contain structures which let them carry out a specific job within the organism.
Function of red blood cell
Caries oxygen around the body
Contain the protein haemoglobin which binds the oxygen to the red blood cell
Function of sperm cell
Carries genetic information to the egg
They have a tail which allows them to swim to met the egg cell
Function of palisade mesophyll
Carries out photosynthesis in leaves
The cells have many chloroplasts so they can absorb more light
Function of root cell
Absorption of water from the soil
Have small extensions from their surface called root hairs which increases surface area to allow more water to be absorbed
What is a tissue?
A group of cells of the same type that work together to carry out a specific function
What is an organ?
A group of tissues which act together to carry out a particular function
Heart tissues and functions
Pumps blood around the body
Cardiac muscle - contracts to pump blood
Nervous tissue - controls speed heart beats
Connective tissue - forms valves preventing blood flowing backwards
Leaf functions and tissues
Main area of a plant for photosynthesis
Palisade mesophyll - main tissue for photosynthesis
Spongy mesophyll - absorbs carbon dioxide from air for photosynthesis
Guard cells - open and closes pores called stomata in lower epidermis to control water loss
Why do multicellular organisms have many different types of cells?
Because the cells are adapted to carry out many different processes required to keep the organism alive
