Human Impact On The Environment Flashcards
Why has there been an increase in intensive farming methods?
Because farmers have had to start producing more food, within the same area of land
Describe the impact of intensive farming on biodiversity
Intensive farming requires the use of many different types of chemicals, including fertilisers and pesticides, which can have a negative impact on the environment and therefore biodiversity
What is bioaccumulation?
When organisms are exposed to pesticides they can be taken in and stored in the bodies of the organisms. Of the practices is stored faster than removed then overtime the pesticide concentration will increase.
What is biological control?
The process in which a non pest organism is used to control the population of a pest organism
Name 2 alternatives to pesticides
Biological control
Genetic engineering
What are fertilisers?
Chemicals which are used to replace or increase the concentration of nutrients (nitrate) in the soil needed for plant growth.
What is leaching?
Fertiliser leaching is excess fertiliser moving out of the soil in a field to a fresh water ecosystem
What is an algal bloom?
An algal bloom is the rapid, uncontrolled growth of algae caused by fertiliser leaching.
What are the effects of an algal bloom?
Algae die and bacteria in the water use dead material for food.
Bacteria uses up all the oxygen for respiration and the oxygen concentration of the water decreases.
Biodiversity decreases.
What is an indicator species?
Any organism taut gives you information about levels of pollution by its presence or absence
Why do we need to produce more food?
Because the Human population of the planet is increasing
