Buds swell, burst, grow into new shoots

What is early shoot growth?
Shoots grow rapidly until vine flowers
Initially from vine carbohydrate reserves, as leaves mature they support the growth through photosynthesis
When does flowering and fruit set take place?
North May-June
South Nov-Dec
What is coulure?
When more flowers than normal fail to fertilize
When does fruit set occur?
When a flower starts to develop into a grape
What is millerandage?
When grapes form without seeds and remain small
When does veraison and berry ripening take place?
North July-Sept
South Jan-March
What does veraison signal?
-The point when the grapes begin to ripen
-Skins change color
What happens between veraison and harvest?
-Grapes swell and fill with water
-Sugar levels rise, acid drops
-Color and flavor compounds accumulate, tannins develop
What is green harvesting?
Removal of a proportion of grape bunches
