Levels Of Measurement Flashcards
What deos levels of measurement refer to?
It refers to 3 types of data:
Nominal data
Ordinal data
Interval data
Define nominal data?
Data that is represented in the form of categories which is also discrete data
Is nominal data continuous or discrete?
It is discrete
Define ordinal data?
Data that is scored, which can ranked (AO2 - there is not true consistency between the gaps.)
Eg income or GCSE
What is another way to say interval data?
Ratio data
Define interval data?
Ordered data which is based on specific equal intervals of size
Give an example of interval data?
Units of measure for length and time
Why may you not use ordinal data?
Ordinal data uses scores or rank: when completing questionnaires, there is a chance of social desirability bias. This would suggest that the data could be unreliable.
Due to the nature of scale, there is no equal value between them. For example, a likert scale using a scale of 1-5, does not indicate that 5 is 3 times for likely than 2
