leukocyte pathology Flashcards
leukocytoses
A WBC count above normal range.
Mature Neutrophilia
Caused by infection, inflammation, stress (toxic granulation, dohle bodies, cytoplasmic vacuolization)
Immature neutrophilia
Three forms: left shift, leukmoid reaction (elevation of leukocytes), leukoerythroblastotic reaction (nucleated RBC).
Mature lymphocytosis
Caused by infectious lymphocytosis, bordetella pertussis, transient stress.
Downey cells
Three classifications. Evidence of reactive lymphocytosis leukemia.
Reactive lymphocytosis
Lots of abnormal cells
Basophilia
Uncommon; component of chronic myelogenous leukemia
Monocytosis
Caused by infection, autoimmune disease, malignancy
Eosinophilia
Caused by drugs, asthma, skin disease, parasites
Acute leukemia
Malignant proliferation of immature myeloid or lymphoid cells in bone marrow.
Acute myeloid leukemia
Malignant proliferation of myeloid blast >20% in blood/bone marrow. Involves neutrophilic, monocytic, erythroid, megakaryotic
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Malignant proliferation of lymphoid blast in blood and bone marrow. Most common in children, good prognosis.
Chronic myeloid leukemia
Occurs in adults, left shift WBC, Basophilia
Philadelphia chromosome
Oncogene created with translocation of chromosome 9 and 22. Chronic myeloid leukemia.
Leukemia
Malignancy of hematopoietic cells. Starts in bone marrow, can spread to blood and nodes. Myeloid or lymphoid. Acute or chronic
