2 April 1623 letter
Thomas Nichols writing to Sir John Worsenholme
Nichols asked for
Supplies and things for the continuation of the colony
Nichols: “we have not been eating the deer, fish and fowl talked about in England” instead
Ate oats, peas, bread and water
Asking for each man to have a pound of butter and a pound of cheese per week
Nichols: women
Necessary to the colony
Difficult for poor men to attract them
Nichols: for all his services to the Company
He did not have return to fill a tobacco pipe
Nichols: colonists died miserably through nastiness and sickness because no one cares for them
Asking for women to be sent over to help with sickness
Nichols: felt the women did nothing but
Ate all the food without working to help the colony
1 April 1623 letter
From Christopher Best
Best: on food
Short on corn and nourishing food
Best: surgeon Mr Rousley
Came to Virginia on the James ship with 10 men
All his servants died
Could not continue without the servants
Best: colonists taken into captivity by indigenous people
Only women taken
Any men taken would have been killed
Best: 2 or 3 freemen short on meat
Went into the woods to shoot deer
Accidently shot a calf belonging to an adventurer
As punishment had to serve the Company for 7 years as indentured servants
