Letters with A Flashcards
Arterial Blood Gas (ABG)
A test that analyzes arterial blood oxygen, carbon dioxide, bicarbonate content, and blood PH. this test is used to determine the effectiveness of respiration.
Accession number
A unique number is given for each test request. The accession number identifies a specimen as long it remains in the laboratory.
AFP- Alpha-fetoprotein
AFP is usually found in the human fetus. but abnormal levels of AFP may indicate a neural tube defect in an infant or another fetal developmental problem. The test is performed on maternal serum. If the results are abnormal, a test on the amniotic fluid will be used to confirm the results.
Aliquot
When a specimen is collected, it may need to be divided to run several tests. An Aliquot is a fraction of the specimen. Each aliquot has its tube for testing and is labeled with the same information as the original specimen.
Antisepsis
The practice of using antiseptics to eliminate the microorganisms that cause diseases.
Arrhythmia
An abnormal rate of muscle contractions in the heart can present as bradycardia(Too Slow), tachycardia (too fast), or irregular.
ASAP- As Soon As Possible
Used if the results are quickly needed though not to prevent from the patient dying.
Asepsis
The state of being free from disease-causing contaminants( such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) by preventing contact with microorganisms. The term asepsis often refers to those practices used to promote or induce asepsis in an operative field in surgery or medicine to prevent infection.
Aseptic
Free from contamination caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms.
Autologous Blood Transfusion
Intraoperative blood salvage, also known as an autologous blood transfusion or cell salvage, is a medical procedure involving recovering blood lost during surgery and reinfusing it into the patient. It is an effective form of autotransfusion.
