Polycythemia Vera
To treat polycythemia vera (too many red blood cells)
will test for hematocrit (physician)
If red blood cells are excessive a blood draw will be conducted for up to 500mL (therapeutic donation)
maximum count of RBC is unhealthy and can lead to internal organ issues.
Hemochromatosis
happens when the patient is holding too much iron in their system.
1. could be caused by genetic issues or dietary intake.
2. If iron is not metabolized it will be stored in major organ tissues, the heart, liver, and pancreas
3. Secondary cause/ patient has had many blood transfusions quickly and a diet very high in iron.
4. iron from the tissues will create new red blood cells.
Modern Bloodletting
- The average adult body contains 5.0 liters- 7.0 liters.
- The total volume of blood that should be drawn from an adult is 1% to 5% within 24 hours.
Stool Specimens/Collection
- Always wear gloves and wash your hands afterward.
- A hat-shaped plastic lid is used to collect specimens
- place a plastic wrap across the toilet’s rim under the seat.
- If anything touches the water, dirt, or urine. It needs to be taken again.
Stool specimens test 1/ Stool guaiac test
- Look for hidden (occult) blood in a stool sample.
2.. it’s the most common fecal occult blood test (FOBT). - Guaiac is a plant substance that coats the FOBT test cards.
Stool specimens test 2/ fecal fat analysis
- it’s a diagnostic test that will look for issues of fat malabsorption or excessive fat in the feces.
- if the patient can not make it to the lab they can put it in their fridge for up to 72hrs
