Whats a case study
In-depth detailed study of an individual or particular group over a significant period of time. Use info from a range oof sources, such as the person concerned, or familty members.
When are case studies used
When studying unique or unusial examples of behaviour which can provide insight into psycnological functioning and or support/challenge existing throties
Longitudinal research
A type of correlational research that involves looking at variables over an extended period of time
Can take place over weeks, months, or years. or even decades
Strengths of case studies
highly detailed, in depth qualitative data can be gained.
Has mundane realism and ecological validity
Often the only suitable method in studying rare behaviour
Weaknesses of case studies
Low population validity, cant be generalised.
Low internal validity and reliability due to a lack of researcher objectivity and distortion of memories
Time consuming and expensive
