Lesson 1 Flashcards
3 methodologies that collect data
experiments, case studies, interviews
Defenition of primary data
All data is gathered by the researcher
eg. the researcher is interested in differences between murderers and non murderers brains, the researcher will organise and gather the brain scans themself, and compare them.
Defenition of secondary data
All data is gathered from secondary sources, (literature reviews, books, the internet)
Eg, if the researcher is interested in the difference between murderers and non murderers brains, they will look at researches already gathered in this ares to draw their own conclusion.
Defenition of quantitative data
Numerican data, represents how long or how much of something there is.
Eg. A researcher is interested in children’s behaviour in a playground. They tally down how many times they observe a certain behaviour.
Qualitative data
Non numerical data, is in words, cant be quantified. Qualitative data can be turned into quantitative data by putting the info into groups and counting the frequency.
Key features of an experiment?
IV, DV, cause and effect
Whats an independant variable?
An event that is directly influenced by the experimenter to observe its effects on the dependant variable
(variable that is changed)
Labratory experiments
Conducted in a labratory (controlled environment)
The IV is manipulated, DV is measured
Participants know they are taking part, even if they dont know the true aims.
Whats a dependant variable?
The variable that is being measured by the experimenter
(variable that is effected by the change)
Field experiments
Conducted in a more natural environment (school, hospitals ect.)
The IV is manipulated, the DV is measured
Participants don’t know they are taking part
Quasai experiment
Conducted in Labratory of Field
Iv is not manipulated, it occurs naturally, the DV is measured.
The participants can know or not know they are taking part.
Two types of quasai experiments
Natural experiment: Those with a naturally occuring IV that has some imput from the person (weight, divorcr)
Test of difference: Those with a naturally occuring IV they were born with (gender, visual ability)
