LESSON 8_ ENERGY RESOURCES Flashcards
1
Q
HOW IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY TAPPED AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY?
A
The cracks and fissures under volcanoes create geothermal energy
2
Q
What do you call the water pockets affected and heated by the hot magma
A
Geothermal reservoir
3
Q
In producing electricity using Geothermal
Power Plants, there are three aspects that needs to be considered.
A
- Heat from inside the Earth
- Water or Binary fluid
- Path for the fluid to travel from Geothermal reservoir to surace (through drilling)
4
Q
3 Types of Geothermal powerplants
A
- Dry steam power plant
- Flash power plant
- Binary power plant
5
Q
3 types of geotheral powerplants
- The oldest of the three. This is the type of power plant in areas where the temperature in the reservoir is very high that water is turned to steam.
A
Dry steam power plant
6
Q
3 types of geotheral powerplants
- Uses water of at least 200oC.
- Hot water from the reservoir rises to the surface and is “flashed” or turned into steam because of the rapid drop in pressure.
- This is the most common type of geothermal power plant.
A
Flash power plant
7
Q
- Uses binary fluid.
- Binary fluids are fluids that are of lower boiling point than water.
- Are used because the water’s temperature is less than 200oC and is not enough to vaporize the water as it travels to the surface.
- But since it still carries geothermal energy, the heat from the water is transferred to the binary fluid which transforms it to vapor through a heat exchanger.
A
Binary power plant
