What is a union?
A union is an organization that represents employees’ interest to management on such issues as compensation, hours of work, and working conditions.
What is the main goal of labor unions in Canada?
To obtain economic benefits and improved treatment for their members, which includes lobbying for legislative changes
Why do Unions exist?
To protect employees interests against management decisions that are seen as damaging, thus limiting managerial discretion
What two general purposes have for Canada’s labor laws
-To provide a common set of rules for fair negotiations and to ensure the protection of the public interest by preventing the impact of labor disputes from inconveniencing the public
The Labour Relations Board (LRB) in every Canadian province and territory except Quebec is responsible for what?
Responsible for interpreting, administering, and enforcing labor relations legislation. Comprised of three parties- Representatives of unions, Management, and a neutral chair or vice-chair.
(typically a government representative)
What is the 5 Steps to Labor Relations Process
Step 1: Employees decide to seek collective representation
Step 2: Union organizing campaign begins
Step 3- If there is sufficient employee support, union received official recognition
Step 4- Union and management negotiate to arrive at a mutually satisfactory collective agreement
Step 5- Day-to-day contract administration begins
what is Collective bargaining?
The negotiations that take place between a labor union and the employer in attempt to arrive to a mutually acceptable collective agreement
What is Good faith bargainging?
Unions and management representatives communicate and negotiate; that proposals be matched with counterpropsals; and that both parties make every reasonable effort to arrive at an agreement

1: Preparation for Negotiations
2-Face-to-Face Negotiations
3-Contract approval process
What is a grievance?
Is a written allegation of a contract violation, filed by an individual bargaining unit member,the union, or management
what is the CLC and how many main functions does it have?
The Canadian Labour Congress is a example of a higher level of a union structure. and it has 5 main functions
When were the rights of workers fully recognized on a national basis in Canada?
Mid- 1940s that the Rights of wokers to organize and Bargain collectively on a national basis were fully recognized.
What is the LRB and what is it responsible for?

A situation in which an employer agrees in writing to recognize a labor union as the exclusive bargaining agent for a specific group of employees without resorting to the formal certification process
