Socioeconomic Staus
A position with a stratified group or society that is often determined by a person’s wealth, income, power, prestige, education, and any other characteristics that have value.
Social Stratification
The arrangement of categories of individuals based on the distribution of valued resources.
Income
Measured as a flow of earnings over a certain time period, usually a year.
Wealth
Results from the flow of income are measured as total assets at a particular time.
Inequality
The unequal distribution of valued resources.
Inequity
Do not have equal access to these institutions and/or the opportunity to obtain valued resources.
Achieved Status
A social position is taken on voluntarily and is thought to reflect ability and effort.
Ascribed Status
A social position into which a person is born or one that is placed on them involuntarily later in life.
Classism
Asserting that members of the lower class do not obtain upward social mobility because they lack the ability to make an effort, and others are unwilling to provide support to those seeking to get and stay out of poverty.
