Sex
Socially constructed category based on the biological distinction between male, female, and intersex individuals.
Intersex
A sex category that includes individuals who are born with male and female sex characteristics.
Gender
A socially constructed category based on personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to established sex categories.
Gender Identity
How a person feels internally regarding their gender.
Gender Dysphoria
Being discontent with the physical or social aspects of one’s sex.
Gender Euphoria
Being content with the physical or social aspects of one’s sex.
Gender Presentation
Describes a person’s external displays of gender.
Gender Socialization
A process by which people learn and internalize gender identity and forms of gender presentation.
Gender Discrimination
Any form of unequal and unjust treatment of individuals based on gender identity and/or expression.
Sexual Orientation
A person’s enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction to members of the same or other gender.
Coming Out
A lifelong process of self-acceptance wherein a person accepts their own identity and/or reveals their identity to others.
