Ability
Describes the capacity of an individual or group to be able to complete a given task.
Disability
Any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do activities and interact with the world around them.
Moral Model of Disability
Presents disability as having meaning about the person’s or the family’s character, deeds, thoughts, and karma.
Medical Model of Disability
Presents disability as an impairment in a body system or function that is inherently pathological.
Social Model of Disability
Presents disability as one aspect of a person’s identity, much like race/ethnicity, gender, etc.
Case Study
A detailed analysis of a person or group, especially as a model of medical, psychiatric, psychological, or social phenomena.
Handicap
An environmental or attitudinal barrier that limits the opportunity for a person to participate fully in a role or activity.
Ableism
The belief that some abilities are inherently superior, valuable, and/or worthy of attention to others and the corresponding acts and systems of discrimination.
Supplemental Security Income
A program that was created to assist those who have trouble finding or maintaining gainful employment.
Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act
An act that guarantees access to a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment to every child with a disability.
Americans with Disabilities Act
An act that established people with disabilities as a protected group and established formal standards for accessibility in public spaces.
Affordable Health Care Act
An act that makes it illegal for insurance companies to deny coverage or charge more for those with pre-existing conditions.
Disability Culture
A way of life that is developed due to shared experiences among individuals with disabilities.
Community
A collection of individuals who are not socially connected but have common interests or shared qualities and share a distinct identity.
