Lesson 4.2: Protozoa Flashcards
Asexual reproduction beginning as a protruberance from the parent cell that grows to become a daughter cell
Budding
An asexual reproduction where there is multiple fission; the nucleus undergoes multiple divisions before the cell divides.
Schizogony
An asexual reproduction where there is multiple fission; the nucleus undergoes multiple divisions before the cell divides.
Schizogony
2 kinds Sexual reporduction of a protozoa
- Conjugation
- Syngamy
Sexual reporduction where two cells fuse, and a haploid nucleus (micronucleus) from each cell migrates to the other cell.
Conjugation
Haploid nucleus
Micronucleus
Process of protozoan conjugation
- Haploid micronucleus fuses with the haploid micronucleus within the cell
- Parent cells separate, each now a fertilized cell
- When cells divide, they producd daughter cells with recombined DNA
A sexual reporduction where the protozoan produce gametes (gametocytes), which are haploid sex cells. During reproduction, two gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.
Syngamy
Other term for gametes that some protozoa produce, which are haploid sex cells
Gametocytes
What is formed when 2 gametes are fused during syngamy?
Diploid zygote
Process by which a protozoa produces a protective capsule called cyst
Encystment
Protective capsule produced by some protozoa
Cyst
What permits the organism to survive when food, moisture, or oxygen are lacking, when temperature are not suitable, or when toxic chemicals are present?
Cyst
Cystbformed by members of the phylum apicomplexa
Oocyst
Nutrition of a protozoa
Mostly aerobic heterotrophs
