Lesson 4: DNA/ Genome Flashcards
1
Q
Where is DNA found ?
A
- In the nucleus.
- Contained in structures called: “chromosomes.”
2
Q
What is DNA?
A
- DNA is a polymer made up of two strands - forming a double helix.
- It is made of 4 different nucleotides.
3
Q
What is a gene?
A
- A gene is a small section of DNA on a chromsome.
4
Q
What do genes code for?
A
- Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids - to make a specific protein.
5
Q
What is the “genome” of an organism?
A
- The genome of an organism is the entire gentic material of that organism.
6
Q
What is the importance of understanding the human genome?
A
- Search for genes linked to different types of disease ie. cancer.
- Undertanding/ treating inherited disorders.
- Used to trace migration patterns from the past.
