Lesson 8: Waste Management/ Land Use Flashcards
Over time, why has more waste been produced?
Think, population….
1.) Rapid growth in human population PLUS increase in the standard of living means people are using more resources so more waste is produced.
True or False
Waste and chemical materials will ALWAYS cause pollution, no matter how you deal with it.
- False.
- If waste is properly handled, then pollution won’t be caused.
In what three places can pollution occur?
1.) In water.
2.) In air.
3.) On land.
How does pollution occur in water? Ie. what pollutes water?
3 different chemicals/ substances.
1.) Sewage
2.) Fertiliser
3.) Toxic chemicals.
What pollutes the air?
2 main SPEC answers
1.) Smoke (ie. smog.)
2.) Acidic gases (ie. sulphur dioxide/ oxides of nitrogen.)
What does pollution do to animals and plants? What effect does this have on biodiversity?
- Pollution kills plants and animals which can reduce biodiversity.
How do humans reduce the amount of land available for animals and plants?
4 main ways…
1.) Building on land.
2.) Quarrying.
3.) Farming
4.) Dumping waste.
What is the issue with humans destroying peat bogs (and other areas of peat) in order to extract peat (a fuel?)
- Reduces the area of habitat for living organisms.
- Therefore, reduces the variety of different plants, animals and micro-organisms that live there (ie. reduces biodiversity in that habitat.)
What is released when peat is decayed/ burnt?
- Release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
What needs to be done to peat in order for it to release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere?
2 things….
- Decayed.
- Burnt
2 examples of land pollution?
- Land-fill
- Toxic chemicals
What is peat used for?
2 things….
- Used to produce garden compost.
- Used as a fuel.
