Lesson 3 - Fast Carbon Cycle Flashcards
What is sequestration?
Movement of carbon into stores
Has effect of lowering atmospheric CO2
What is the thermohaline circulation?
Global circulation of ocean currents
Moderates ocean temp. + salinity
How do warmer waters behave?
Rise due to lower density
How do colder waters behave?
Sink due to higher density
How does salinity affect water?
Increases density
Where does the thermohaline circulation begin?
Main current begins in polar oceans
How does the thermohaline circulation begin?
Water cools
Sea ice forms
Surrounding waters salinate + sink
What happens as the current passes Antarctica?
Recharged by extra cold, salty waters
What happens after the current passes Antarctica?
Divides Northward into 2 branches
Indian Ocean
Western Pacific
How do the 2 branches behave?
Travel Northwards
Warm + rise due to tropical waters
Loop back towards South/West
What happens after the 2 branches rejoin?
Warm surface waters circulate globally
Eventually return to North Atlantic
Cycle restarts
