Q

paleozoic and moving continents

A
  • now they are very different climatically and especially where continents were located
    TODAY –> colder and dryer
  • and masses concentrated in the northern hemisphere
  • ice at the poles (not the case for the paleozoic)

Q

how wind and ocean affect climate

A
  • directions of major winds and land mass – drive currents
  • being so close to the ocean stabilizes temperature
  • position of land affects climate on that land and the position of continent on one side of the globe affects climate on the other side of the globe

Q

land masses move via:

A

continental drift
- plate techtonics
- drive movement of layer on top
- due to major intersection of pacific and ()
- himilayas –> indian subcontinent colllieded into an asian subcontinent
- euramerica — present day north america/greenland/europe

Q

paleozoic climates

A
  • cause huge climate changes - cause mass cooling - would melt and ocean levels would rise

Q

devonian

A
  • wide spread of lands
    -dramatic reduction in carbon dioxide
  • produces a climate where we can live in

Q

late devonian extinction

A
  • series of extinctions
marine vertebrates took a big hit
  • about 76% of vertebrate families
  • most plactoderns and lobe finned fishes
  • hypothermia and hypoxia

Q

permian extinction

A

late paleozoic extinction

series of volcanic eruptions
- yes, there was a large section of terresterial earth that was covered in lava, but what really causes the mass extinction was that the volcanos were releasing various types of greenhouses gases –> raised atmosphere by 6 degrees celcius –> major greenhouse effect –> causes a warming that thawed previously frzen gases –> runaway positive feedback loop

Q

mechanism of greenhouse effect

A
  • if it is cool outside and its sunny –> why does the car get hot
  • when the sun bounces off the dashboard and evertything else in the car, the wavelength changes from the visible light that readily passes through the window to infared and other kinds of light –> the window is only permeable to visible light
  • energy gets reapped inside and just builds and builds

^^ gasses are like the window
- allow for light to come in but the wavelength changes when the light bounces off of earth and various objectes in earth
