Lesson 20 Flashcards
Why is the gap principle important to biblical interpretation?
If you do not account for prophetic gaps, then Old Testament prophecies that have been partially fulfilled must be reinterpreted.
Give a brief description of each of the following views:
a. Amillenialism
b. Postmillennialism
c. Premillennialism
a. Amillennialism teaches that the millennium is allegorical or spiritual, and refers to the church age.
b. Postmillennialism - Christ will return after a long time, once the church bring about social and political change.
c. Premillennialism -there is a lengthy gap between the 69th and 70th week of Daniel, and Jesus Christ will return in the future before a literal 1,000 year reign of peace.
List six unique features of prophecy.
a. Figurative language and symbols
b. Typology
c. Double references
d. Idealised pictures
e. Culturally relative terms
f. Fulfilment does not have to be in the exact form of the prophecy
Give a reason for why scripture was written in prophetic form, other than to predict future events.
To serve as instruction, and to serve as a warning.
What is the main purpose of prophecy?
To prove God’s nature , to encourage the faithful, and to warn the unrighteous of impending judgement.
How did the New Testament authors use the Old Testament?
They quoted, paraphrased, interpreted, applied and commented liberally from the OT as they saw fulfilment of those passages in their time.
