Instrumental Case
is generally translated using the
preposition with/by
puriso hatthena pattaṃ gaṇhāti
“The man holds the bowl with the hand”
buddhena desito dhammo
“The Dhamma [is/was/has been] taught by the Buddha”
puriso samaṇena saddhiṃ gacchati
“the man goes with the man”
puriso lobhena dānaṃ na deti
“The man, due to greed, does not give a gift” (“Because of greed, the man is not generous”)
tena samayena … [time]
“On that occasion…”
yena [noun in the nominative] tena upasaṅkamati [place]
“where [that person/that thing is], there he/she approaches”
dhammo buddhena desito
“The Dhamma [is/has been] taught by the Buddha”
buddho dhammaṃ deseti
The Buddha teaches the Dhamma.
evaṃ me sutaṃ
Thus, by me, heard.
evaṃ puriso kammaṃ karoti
The man performs an action in this manner.
evaṃ puriso vadati
“Thus the man speaks”

“Yes, venerable Sir”
sammāsambuddho tattha uppanno
“The Perfectly and Completely Awakened One [has] arisen there”
