Lesson 2 Flashcards
evolution of neurones and muscles.
brain cells and muscles evolved together, enabling animals to move. Likley started in single celled organisms.
what is the nerve net?
‘nervous system’ of older structures (e.g. jellyfish). consists entirely of neurons that receive sensory information and connect directly to other neurons that move muscles.
What is ganglia?
most recently evolved in invertebrates, they are clusters of neurons that resemble primitive brains.
what is Australopithecus?
-first primates to show distinct human characteristics
-evidence suggest they are our common ancestor,
Encephalization quotient (EQ)
measure of brain size to allow comparison between different species
