Lesson 13: Limbic System Flashcards
What are the four main structures of the Papez Circuit?
Amygdala
Hippocampus
Cingulate gyrus
Septum
What is the role of the fornix?
Connects the hypothalamus with the hippocampus, and then the olfactory cortex
What is the role of the cingulum?
Connects the cingulate gyrus with the parahippocampal lobe and the hippocampus
What is the role of the stria terminalis?
Connects the septum and the amygdala
What is the role of the medial forebrain bundle?
Connects the mammillary bodies and the septum
What is the role of the mammillothalamic tract?
Connects the mammillary bodies and the neocortex
What are the 3 main roles of the septum?
Hormone secretion
Behavioural reaction
Memory facilitation
What are the two main roles of the cingulate gyrus?
Anxiety
Altered behaviour
What are the 4 main functions of the limbic system?
Memory
Olfactory
Viscera
Emotion
What occurs with removal of the amygdala? When would this be done?
Those with hyper-aggressive behaviour
Hyper-sexual, increased interest in food, decreased aggression
Emotional liability, restlessness
Decorticate rigidity
Location
What occurs
Symptoms
Lesion between red nucleus and cortex
Cuts off influence of corticospinal tract = no modulation from the cerebrum of the RF, VF, red nuc
Symptoms: flexion of the upper limbs, extension of lower
PATTERN
Decerebrate rigidity
Location
What occurs
Symptoms
Mid-brainstem lesion
Lower RF and VF - uncheck by red nuc
Symptoms: extension of BOTH upper and lower limbs
VERY strong rigidity
Correctly locate: fornix amygdala hippocampus cingulate gyrus septal nuclei mammillary bodies ant thalamus RT olfactory tract
See image
What are the two main roles of the reticular system (ascending)?
Alertness and attentiveness
How does the reticular system modulate alertness?
Ascending RF responds to sensory input = levels of alertness
Controls fatigue via melatonin in pineal gland
