Lesson 13: Ergogenic aids Flashcards
What is an ergogenic aid?
Substances that enhance energy production, use or recovery and provide athletes with a competitive advantages
What are the different types of ergogenic aid?
- Caffeine
- Creatine
- Steroids
C.C.S- Protein
- Nitrates
- Beta-Alanine
- Steroids
What are the different ways of ingesting caffeine?
1 Found in leaves, fruits, and variety of plants such as coffee & tea.
2. Can be added to beverages and medications
Which caffeine intake method is more rapid. How do they differ?
Caffeine in a gum is absorbed faster than in a capsule. This is because with gum, the absorption will begin in the buccal mucosa in the mouth.
How does caffeine work?
Stimulant to the brain:
1. Adenosine binds to its receptor, which causes fatigue. Caffeine prevents adenosine binding and delays fatigue.
2. Stimulated lipolysis
3. Stimulated calcium release, which is important for muscle contraction
How is creatine synthesized internally (endogenously)?
The liver & kidneys
Where it can be found exogenously in the diet?
- Meat products (beef, pork, poultry)
- 2.2 lbs beef = 5g creatine - Normal dietary consumption= 1 g/day
- Common supplement
What is the daily synthesis rate of creatine?
Exogenous = 1 g/day
Endogenous = 1g/day
Net accumulation = 2g/day
What is the turnover rate of creatine?
2 g/day
What are the side effects associated with anabolic steroids?
- Infertility
- High blood pressure
3, Breast development - Increased risk of prostate cancer.
What dose is commonly taken by steroid users, and why is this so dangerous?
Steroids are often taken at a dose 40 x greater than medical doses.
How does Beta-alanine work?
It limits the pre-cursor production of carnosine, which leads to performance increase due to delayed fatigue.
Why take beta-alanine v. carnosine?
With beta alanine, the body increase carnosine synthesis and enhances exercise performance in the long run.
How are ergogenic aids classified?
- Nutritional
- Pharmacological
- Physiological
- Psychological
What are illegal Ergogenic aids called?
PES/PEDs
