Lesson 07 Managing conflict (Part 1) Flashcards
- What is an inevitable and necessary part of community life?
a. Conflict
- Define conflict:
a. Conflict is the intersection of competing claims, ideals, expectations, and desires.
- Describe what conflict is and what it is not:
a. In this sense, conflict is not a behaviour, activity, or endeavour, but rather a statement of what is—a reality.
- Give a biblical example of operational (healthy) conflict:
a. In Acts 15, the early church solved the problem of conflicting interests—maintaining Jewish identity (Jesus was a Jewish Messiah) Versus making the gospel available to non-Jews. The church met together and solved this conflict in a very healthy way.
- What does unhealthy conflict arise from?
a. Unhealthy or unwholesome conflict is conflict that arises from unhealthy motives, selfish agendas uninformed decisions, and ignorance.
- What is confrontation:
a. Confrontation is the recognition and engagement of conflict by the parties involved.
- List the two (2) types of confrontation:
a. Contention (unhealthy confrontation)
b. Collaboration (healthy confrontation)
- List two (2) negative results of undirected conflict:
a. Undirected conflict can consume an organisation’s resources.
b. If conflict is not publicly addressed, it can become the topic of personal conversations in informal settings.
- Does a leader need to personally manage every single conflict? Why/why not?
a. While it is vital to address conflicts, keep in mind that a leader does not have to personally manage every single conflict—some will work themselves out over time (as situations, circumstances, and people change), while others can be dealt with by the individuals in question between themselves.
- How does the process of conflict create cohesion in a team?
a. Many times, it is the process of conflict that creates cohesion in a team, since they have lived through the experience and come to a shared conclusion.
