Lenses Flashcards
what is the purpose of focal length?
is to take parallel rays of light and converge them into a single point of focus so they can be recorded, either on a price of field or a far more commonly with a digital sensor
the point where the lens cause the light rays to converge is called the focal point
why is focal length used?
it tells us one very important thing:
-what the field of view of that lens will be. since the sensor remains the same size regardless of what lens you use, the field of view tells us how much the lens can madnify distant objects
the shorter the focal length what kind of field of view?
wider
a longer focal length what kind of field of view?
narrower
a zoom lens has a variable focal length of what?
18-55MM
a prime lens has a fixed focal length of?
50MM
standard lens have what kind of focal length?
mid rang3 somewhere around 50’m but anything between 40-60 mm
what does the standard lens focus length show?
a full frame camera will give you roughly the same field of view as the naked eye - not exact. it will look natural with no distortion
standard lens are use to photograph?
- portraits
- street
- indoor
- landscape
what kind of focal lengths to telephoto lens have?
longer focal lengths and they magnify subjects allowing you to take photos of subjects that are farther away
telephoto lens have a focal length of?
above 60MM but can range to around 70-200MM and then “super telephoto” which is anything over 200MM or more
when will you use telephoto lens?
when you are far away from a subject such as wildlife and sports
what kind of telephoto lens are used in what type of photography?
- wildlife
- sports
- astronomy
- where you want background blue
what are the focal length or wide angle lens?
wider range anything below 40MM,
everything is zoomed out
(smaller the number the more fit in the frame and more distortion)
wide angle lens is used in what photography?
- group photos
- lifestyle
- environmental shots
- architecture
what kind of feel does wide angle else give of?
inclusive feel to an image in other words viewer feels like they are there
what are macro lens for?
close up photography, they have the ratio of 1:2 which basically means they can capture your subject at a life size magnification
capturing details
what type of photography will you sue macro lens for?
- nature
- insect
- portraiture
what is a fish eye lens used for?
type of lens that produces an extreme wide angle image with distortions that makes straight lines seem curved
what are fisheye lens good for?
- photographing churches and indoors
- equally good lenses for waking around the city and emphasis the height of buildings as well as capturing bird eye views
