What does ‘fit to practice’ mean?
Not necessarily based on a member of staffs qualifications but based on their behaviour towards others including colleagues, patients and other members of the public. Someone who is fit to practice needs to have good attributes of attitude and behaviour.
What does CQC stand for?
Care Quality Commission - 2011
What do the CQC do?
The independent regulator of health and adult social care services in England.
Who has to register with the CQC?
Dental care providers - individually or as an organisation. (Only relevant in England)
What is the stated aim of the CQC?
Ensuring people get better care
What is clinical governance?
Refers to the NHS framework of quality assurance that must be aspired to and followed by all those working in the delivery of NHS health and dental care. It defines the level of service quality that NHS organisations are expected to meet.
How long has clinical governance been involved with dentistry for?
7 years
Clinical governance covers 12 themes, what are they?
- Infection control
- Child protection
- Dental radiography
- Safety assessment for staff, patients, public and environment
- Evidence-based practice and research
- Prevention and public health
- Clinical records, patient privacy and confidentiality

How long should patients records be retained for?
11 years after completion of treatment or unto the age of 25 (applies to children).
What legislations apply to the confidentiality of patient information?
- Data protection Act 1998
- Access to Health Records Act 1990
- Freedom of Information Act 1995 (came into affect in 2000)
What is information governance?
The quality assurance system put into place to the safety of and appropriate use of personal and patient information. The practice must have a named IG lead person.
Who can give consent?
- someone who understand what is right from wrong
- someone who understands that something requires to treatment to make it right
- someone who that understands the consequence of undergoing or declining treatment
- someone who can communicate their decision (speech not being necessary)
What could be classed as abuse?
- Neglect
- Physical abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Sexual abuse
