What is a risk assessment?
Being able to identify a potential hazard that may occur
What should be noted in a risk assessment?
- Identify the hazard - eg. chemicals/equipment
- Identify who may be at risk
- Evaluate the risk - will it occur only if it’s misused or is the hazard a potential risk with every use?
- Control the risk - eg. staff training/policies/health monitoring/remove the hazard
- Record the risk assessment fundings to prove compliance and ensure all staff are full informed
- Review the assessment process to ensure no injuries occur
What regulatory law has put into place to reduce the risk of fire and to ensure people can escape the premise safely is a fire did occur?

What is a class A fire?
Caused by ignition of carbon-containing items such as paper, wood and textiles
What is a class B fire?
Caused by flammable liquids such as oils, solvents and petrol.
What is a class C fire?
Caused by flammable gases such as domestic gas, butane and liquefied petroleum gas.
What is a class D fire?
Caused by reactive metals that oxidise in air such as sodium and magnesium.
What is a class E fire?
Caused by electrical components and equipment.
What is a class F fire?
Caused by liquid fats such as those used in kitchens or restaurants.
What is a red fire extinguisher used for?
Can be used on all fires except electrical fires as it is a water based extinguisher.
What is the black fire extinguisher used for?
Can be used on all fires and is made up of carbon dioxide.
What is a blue fire extinguisher used for?
For use on all fires and it is made up of dry powder
What is a cream fire extinguisher used for?
Used to seal surfaces of burning materials such as wood, paper, paint, flammable liquids and electrics
