What are the three main activities of the valuing process?
Choosing (choosing carefully from different alternatives after considering each consequence)
Prizing aka treasuring (involves pride, happiness, and public affirmation)
Acting (combining choice into one’s behavior with consistency and regularity on the value)
What is autonomy?
Right to self determination
What is social justice?
Upholding moral, legal, and humanistic rights
What are bioethics?
Encompasses a number of fields of life sciences
What are nursing ethics?
Formal study of ethical issues that arise in the practice of nursing
What are feminist ethics?
Critiques existing patterns of oppression and domination in society especially affecting women and the poor
What are the two categories of ethic-guiding theories?
Utilitarian and deontologic
What is the utilitarian ethic-guiding theory?
The rightness or wrongness of an action depends upon the consequence of the action
What is the deontologic ethic-guiding theory?
An action is right or wrong independent of its consequence
What is an ethical dilemma?
Two or more clear moral principles apply but support mutually inconsistent courses of action
What is ethical distress?
When the nurse knows the right thing to do but either personal or institutional factors make it difficult to follow the course of action
What are the four (and a half) functions of ethics committees?
- education
- policy making
- case review
- consultation
What is the due cause for revoking a license?
- notice of investigation
- fair and impartial hearing
- proper decision based on substantial evidence
What is a nurse’s best defense against license investigation?
- early legal counseling
- character and expert witnesses

What is tort?
