Chapter 19, Taylor Flashcards
What is the genetic theory of aging?
Holds that lifespan depends to a great extend on genetic factors. “Genetic clock.”
What is the immunity theory of aging?
Your immune response declines steadily after younger adulthood as thymus loses size and function. Age associated changes in the immune system are thought to be responsible for the increase in infections such as pneumonia and cancer as adults age.
What is the cross-linkage theory of aging?
A chemical reaction that produces damage to the DNA and cell death. As you age, essential molecules in the cell bind together and interfere with normal cell function.
What is the free radical theory of aging?
Free radicals (molecules with separated high-energy electrons) are formed during cellular metabolism and have adverse affects on adjacent molecules. Irreversible damage results from this. Lipids in cell membranes, as well as proteins and cell organelles, are affected.
What does Erikson’s Theory state?
The middle adult is in a period of generativity versus stagnation. Raise the next generation, accept middle-age changes, adjust to parents aging, and reevaluate one’s goals and accomplishments.
According to Erikson’s Theory, when does a midlife crisis come about?
When one does not achieve the tasks of accepting middle age changes and reevaluating ones goals and accomplishments, but instead focuses on themselves and becomes overly concerned with their own physical and emotional health needs.
What does Havighurst’s theory state?
The developmental tasks of the middle adult are learned behaviors from maturation, personal motives and values, and civic responsibility. To master this stage, one must accept and adjust to physical changes, help their kids, have a good job, adjust to their aging parents, and relate to their spouse.
What does Levinson’s theory state?
The middle adult may choose to either continue an established lifestyle or to reorganize one’s life in a period of midlife transition.
What does Gould’s Theory state?
The middle years are a time when adults look inward, accept themselves, and increase their feelings of contentment with life, and become more concerned with health.
