What are the three types of channels of communication?
Auditory, visual, and kinesthetic (touch)
What does organizational communication consist of?
When people and groups within an organization communicate to achieve established goals. Interdisciplinary groups, or some kind of organization or council or committee
What is the first step toward cultural competence?
Recognizing your own personal cultural beliefs and identifying prejudices or attitudes that could be a barrier to good communication
Is the health care system a culture? Why?
Yes, because it has its own customs, values, and language.
What is territoriality?
The urge to maintain an exclusive right to certain space.
What is the intimate zone?
Interaction between parents and children or people who desire close personal contact. 0-18 inches
What is the personal zone?
Distance when interacting with close friends. 18 inches-4 feet.
What is the social zone?
Space when interacting with acquaintances such as in work or social setting. 4 feet-12 feet.
What is the public zone?
Communication when speaking to an audience or small groups. 12 feet-25 feet
What is the difference between a helping relationship and a social relationship?
- -Helping does not occur spontaneously. Specific purpose with a specific person.
- -unequal sharing of information
- -built on the patient’s needs, not on those of the helping person.
What are the three phases of the helping relationship?
Orientation phase, working phase, termination
What is a dispositional trait?
A characteristic or customary way of behaving.
What is rapport?
A feeling of mutual trust experienced by people in a satisfactory relationship.
What is therapeutic communication?
Being intuitive and paying attention to nonverbal cues.
What is nontherapeutic communication?
Moving the conversation along and not allowing the patient to talk more about what’s on their mind.
