LEED Definitions 1 Flashcards
Define DEVELOPMENT FOOTPRINT
Total land area of a project site covered by buildings and concrete or other impervious surfaces such as roads, parking, or sidewalks.
Define PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED
Land that has been altered by humans that typically requires regulatory permits
Define INFILL SITE
Site where 75% of the land within the property boundary has previously been developed, exclusive of right of ways
Define BROWNFIELD SITE
Previously developed and potentially contaminated site
Define PHASE 2 ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
Identifies problems and possibly remediation required for brownfield sites.
Define INTEGRATIVE PROCESS
An iterative, collaborative approach that involves a project’s stakeholders in the process from the visioning through completion of the construction and throughout building operation.
Define LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT or GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE
Approach to managing rainwater runoff that emphasizes on-site natural features to protect water quality by replicating the natural hydrology of infiltration
Define 95TH PERCENTILE RAINFALL EVENT
Measured precipitation depth accumulated over a 24 hour period for the period of record that ranks as the 95th percentile rainfall depth based on the range of all daily event occurrences during this period.
Define EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE
Performance that is typically earned for achieving double the credit requirements or the next incremental percentage threshold
Define SYNERGIES
Single actions that help achieve more than one prerequisite or credit
Define UPLIGHTING
Any light emitted above the horizontal plane of the fixture
Define LIGHT TRESPASS
Light extending beyond the light boundary
Define SOURCE REDUCTION
Eliminating waste at the source prior to the consumer
Define NON-REGULATED LOAD
Any building load, end use or control which does not have an ASHRAE 90.1-2010 baseline modeling requirement that allows the load and use or control to be modeled differently in the proposed and baseline buildings
Define WATER BUDGET
Project specific method of calculating the amount of water required by the building and associated grounds
Define DEVELOPMENT
Not just the building, it’s all parts of the project including hardscapes, roadways, sidewalks, etc.
Define WETLANDS
Areas inundated or saturated by surface or ground water at a frequency and duration sufficient to support a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions.
Considered nature’s water filter.
Define OPEN SPACE
Generic description for any kind landscape with minimal pavement (must be usable to the project)
Define HABITAT
Specific type of landscape that supports the native ecology and habitats (for wildlife not people)
Define GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE
Soil and vegetation based approach to wet weather management
Define SITE MASTER PLAN
Overall design or development concept for the project and associated buildings and sites
Define PILOT CREDIT LIBRARY
Innovative credits that haven’t been through the complete drafting and balloting process
Define BLOWDOWN
Act of replacing contaminated water in a cooling tower with new, clean water.
Define XERISCAPING
Landscape practice of not using or reducing the need for irrigation
Define CYCLES OF CONCENTRATION
Calculated ratio of concentration of dissolved solids in the blowdown water compared to the make-up water.
Define POTABLE WATER
Water that is fit or suitable for drinking
Define PROCESS WATER
Water that is used for a variety of manufacturing processes, including: boiler make-up water; cooling tower make-up water; coating and plating; rinsing and spraying; washing and many others
Define WASTE STREAM AUDIT
Process conducted over a 24-hr period that identifies the top 5 recyclable waste streams.
Define GERRYMANDERING
Manipulating boundaries to one’s benefit
