Where do you put ledger lines and how should they be shaped?
A
They should be inserted above through or below the note head. There should be a little wider than the noteheads and the same vertical distance apart as the lines of the stave.

Why do we have ledger lines?
A
When notes have to be written which are too high or too low to fit in the five line stave.
