Lecture Three Reading Flashcards
What is repetitive magnetic stimulation?
A technique for producing temporary inactivation of brain areas using repeated pulses of magnetic stimulation
What is an electroencephalogram (EEG)?
A recording of electrical activity in the brain
What is a PET scan?
A brain image produced by recording the radioactivity emitted by cells during different activities
What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
A technique that scans the brain using magnetic fields and radio waves
What is a functional MRI (fMRI)?
A brain imaging technique that combines both MRI and PET
What is the reticular formation?
The region of the brain stem that alerts the cerebral cortex to incoming sensory signals and is responsible for maintaining consciousness and awakening from sleep
What is the function of the hippocampus?
The largest limbic system structure which plays a role in acquiring memories
What is are the three components of the limbic system?
Hypothalamus
Hippocampus
Amygdala
What is the function of the amygdala?
Generation and expression of emotion
What is plasticity?
Changes in the performance of the brain
