What is consciousness?
A state of awareness of internal events and the external environment
What is nonconscious?
Not typically available to consciousness or memory
What is a preconscious memory?
A memory that is not currently conscious but can easily be called into consciousness when necessary
What are the two ways of studying the contents of consciousness?
Think-aloud protocols
Experience-sampling method
What are cultural constrictions of reality?
Ways of thinking about the world which are shared by most members of a particular group of people
What is a circadian rhythm?
A consistent pattern of cyclical body activities usually lasting 24 to 25 hours
What is lucid dreaming?
Being consciously aware that you are dreaming when you are
What is meditation?
A form of altered consciousness designed to enhance self knowledge and well being through reduced self-awareness
What is hypnosis?
A systematic procedure that increases suggestibility
Where is consciousness located in the brain?
Hindbrain and midbrain (arousal and sleep)
Damage to the reticular formation can lead to coma
Prefrontax cortex is key for conscious control of information processing
What four things can hypnosis cause?
Anaesthesia
Sensory distortions and hallucinations
Disinhibition
Post hypnotic suggestions and amnesia
What is dissociation?
Splitting of mental processes into two separate streams of consciousness
What are the benefits of meditation?
Reduces stress Improved mental health Blood pressure Self-esteem Mood Sense of control
