Lecture quiz 4/19/23 (wednesday) Flashcards
What is a limiting amino acid?
- for a protein to be synthesized, all require amino acids must be present at the time of synthesis.
- if an amino acids is in short supply, it will limit the process - it will be the limiting amino acid
What is the definition of a limiting amino acid?
EAA in a feedstuff that is in the lowest amount relative to what the animal requires
What is another way of describing a limiting amino acid
-protein barrel and the essential amino acid as the individual staves making up the barrel
-if one stave is short than the other it will be limiting since the barrel can only be filled to the level of the shortest stave
- If one amino acid is deficient, proteins can only be synthesized to the level of availability of that amino acid
What is the first limiting amino acid for most animals?
LYSINE
In poultry, what is the limiting amino acid?
methionine which contains sulfur = this is beacuse if the connective tissue in feathers
What are added into the commercial swine and poultry diets to meet the requirements of limiting amino acids?
supplemental amino acids
What is protein quality?
- the nutritional value of proteins in feed ingredients varies
- primarily dependent on the composition of amino acids and the digestibility of the protein
T/F animal proteins have a higher quality than plant proteins
T
What is the exception?
soy protein most plant based proteins lack one or more EAA
What is an example of a good all balanced source of amino acids?
egg whites
What do we watch out for in ruminants?
- we only care for protein quantity not quality
- some of the npn in rumenants there is bacteria that makes npn to EAAA
MAKE SURE ONLY GIVE LITTLE NPN IN THE DIET CAUSE ITS DEADLY IF TOO MUCH
What are minerals?
- makes uo 3-5% of the body dry weight = depends on what species
calcium is 50% phosphorus 25% and other minerals 25
calcium is responssible for ?
bones and teeth formation, milk and egg shell
phosphorus is responssible for?
bone and teeth + others like metabolism, phospholipids and other complex molecules
what is the ratio of Ca:P
1:1 to 2:1
young and dairy = 1.5:1 to 2:1
hens = 6:1 cause of egg shells
