Q
Body Chemistry (Hormones) and Hunger
A
- Ghrelin is produced by stomach lining cells (and found in ventromedial hypothalamus and hippocampus), lower in obese pll, increases during meals and decreases after meals
- Leptin in fat cels, decreases reward aspect of food
- Orexin hunger triggering hormone in lateral region of hypothalamus
- PYY temporarily suppresses appetite
6
Q
Set Point Hypothesis
A
- says that we have a weight we gravitate towards naturally either due to biology or childhood eating habits
- breastfed babies self regulate food intake more, have lower obesity and lower cholesterol
- # of fat cells may also impact weight as people always keep the most amount of fat cells that they have ever had, they just shrink if people lose weight… fat cells may impact metabolic rate
7
Q
Obesity
A
- taste preferences exist due to cultures/subcultures
- food deserts
- study: Fiji Adolescent Girls Study studied drive for thinness increase after introduction of TV to a normally heavier-weight centered culture
- heredibility: .74 in identical twins, .32 in fraternal twins, FTO gene linked to increase risk for obesiry
