- individuals not well adapted to their environment will have fewer offspring than well adapted individuals
- offspring inherit many attribute of their parents though there is much variation
- offspring inherit many of the attributes that allow them to survive & produce more offspring
- over a long time, a species evolves to contain more individuals with attributes that promote survival of offspring. The environment selects individuals better adapted to it
