What are the seven elements involved in the communication process?
Referent, sender and receiver, message, channels, feedback, interpersonal variables and environment
What are the four forms of communication?
Verbal, nonverbal, symbolic and metacommunication
What are the four phases of the nurse-patient relationship?
Preinteraction phase (what you find out before you meet and greet), orientation phase (meet and greet, what you can’t get from the chart), working phase (work together to solve problems), and termination phase (patient or nurse is leaving)
What are the four types of nursing relationships?
Nurse-patient helping, nurse-family, nurse-health team and nurse-community
Define therapeutic communication.
Specific responses that encourage the expression of feelings and ideas and convey acceptance and respect
Define active listening.
Being attentive to what a patient is saying both verbally and nonverbally
