What is metabolic syndrome?
A cluster of abnormalities, which often occur together, that are associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease
What are some of the diagnostic markers of metabolic syndrome?
Central adiposity, raised TAGS, Low HDL, hypertension, raised fasting plasma glucose
What are the environmental risk factors for metabolic syndrome?
Sedentary behavious, high fructose intake, low socioeconomic status, birth size/childhood grwoth
What are the 3 key processes that occur in metabolic syndrome?
Insulin resistance, chronic mild inflammation, leptin resistance
What are the 3 key targets for pharmacological therapy in metabolic syndrome?
cholesterol, hypertension, blood glucose
