Lecture 9 - Anthropometry Flashcards
How is anthropometry used in art?
David by Michelangelo, perfectly proportioned man
How is anthropometry used in ergonomics?
To design equipment to fit the average user. Making equipment adjustable for a broad range of users
How is anthropometry used in biomechanics?
To estimate center or mass, inertia, etc
What is the center of mass?
The point about which the body’s mass is evenly distributed. The point about which the body’s net torque is zero
Where is center of mass usually located?
Within the inside limits of the body unless in a horseshoe position
What is the center of gravity?
Refers only to situations that deal with gravity
What are two methods used to calculate the center of mass?
Static method and mass of segments
How can you use the static method to measure center of mass?
Have person lie on a board with the end of the board on a scale and use the appropriate equation.
How can you use mass of segments to calculate the center of mass?
Get mass segments from tables, mathematical modeling, or some x-ray imaging techniques and use appropriate equation
What is inertia?
Resistance to change in motion, specifically a resistance to change in a body’s velocity
What happens as inertia increases?
It becomes harder to change velocity
What is the dynamics center of gravity?
When the center of mass changes constantly (ex. during a sprint)
What is weight?
The force due to gravity. Always acts in the downward vertical direction (vector)
What is mass?
Amount of matter in an object (scalar)
What determines an objects inertia?
Mass
