Lecture 3 - Linear Kinematics in One Direction Flashcards
What is the origin?
The place where the frame of reference begins, the zero point
What is the axis?
A straight line running through the origin
What is direction?
Determined by orientation and sense, pointing towards something
Define kinematics
Study of motion without consideration for what is causing the motion. Tells how they move (position) and what motion is, not what causes it
What is position?
Location in a reference frame
Define displacement
Change in position, a vector quantity, measured in meters. Difference in position between the position of a body at two instances in time
Define distance
How far a body has traveled, a scalar quantity. Total length of the route the body took
Define ratio
One number divided by another number. Ratio = one quantity/another quantity
Define rate
How quickly a value is increasing or decreasing with time. Tells how a variable changes with time
What is the equation for rate?
Rate = change in one quantity/time
Define speed
How fast a body is moving, scalar quantity. Rate of change of distance
What is the equation for speed
Speed = distance/change in time
Define velocity
How fast something is moving in a particular direction, vector quantity. Time rate of change in position (displacement.
What is the equation for velocity?
Velocity = change in position/change in time
Are speed and velocity interchangable?
Only if the body is moving in one direction
