lecture 9 Flashcards
mendel and meiosis
what is the Boveri-Sutton theory?
chromosome theory of inheritance; combines the idea of chromosomes with the paired allele idea by Mendel
what are homologous chromosomes?
paired chromosomes having the same genes(alleles) for the same trait(phenotype) located at the same place(locus) on the chromosome
- generally NOT identical
- same GENES, different alleles
what is cytokinesis?
process during cell division when the cytoplasm of a single cell is divided to form two daughter cells
how many gametes are formed after a single cell undergoes meiosis?
four
what are the names of the steps of meiosis in order?
prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, telophase I, prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II, telophase II
during which stage of meiosis is the genetic information doubles from 2n to 2(2n)?
prophase I
during which stage of meiosis does crossing over occur in the tetrads?
prophase I
are sister chromatids identical?
yes
what are the names of the units that reach out, bind to the tetrads, and pull them to either end of the cell?
microtubules, spindle fibers
when does mendel’s first law of segregation apply in meiosis?
anaphase I, the chromosomes are separated at random
what is the equation for the number of possible gametes given the number of heterozygotes?
of gametes = 2^number of heterozygotes
when does mendel’s second law of independent assortment come into play in meiosis?
prophase I; crossing over
