lecture 7 Flashcards
mendelian genetics
what is a reciprocal cross?
cross between a male of one stain and a female of another and vice versa
what is a self cross?
taking organisms from the F1 generation and crossing them with themselves
what theory did the pea plant experiments disprove?
blended inheritance- the F1 generation were all-round, not a mix of round/wrinkled
what is the ratio of appearance of the recessive trait in the F2 generation?
3 dominant : 1 recessive, even though it wasn’t present at all in F1
what is the discrete particle of inheritance called?
gene
what are alternative forms of a gene called?
alleles
what is the physical location of any gene on a chromosome called?
locus
what is the combination of alleles an individual has called?
genotypes
what is the physical appearance of a trait called?
phenotype
what is an individual having the same alleles(RR or rr) called?
homozygote
what is an individual having different alleles(Rr) called?
heterozygote
what is Mendel’s third law?
the idea of dominance; the trait from one allele will mask the trait of another
what is a monohybrid cross?
mating between two individuals with alleles at a single locus
what is Mendel’s first law?
the segregation of alleles; every individual has two alleles for a trait(diploid)
during the formation of gametes, the alleles separate and the offspring randomly receive one allele from each parent
