Development is imagined as a linear and progressive journey, connecting wealth with development
Prioritises economic growth as development
Eurocentrism
Primacy of European & Western ideas
Development label as value laden (backward/corrupt/uneducated vs progressive/desireable)
Labels with power (“developed nations” have rights and obligations)
Foreign Aid
Transfer of money, goods or services from a donor country/ international organization for the benefit of the recipient country and its population
Range of different purposes - development, security, humanitarian
However, this aid is often conditional
Remittance
Major sources of money for developing nations
Money or Goods sent back to family or friends in their country of origin
Positive, multiplier effect is large
