Power as collective action: Civil Society
Civil Society
Separate from the government and businesses (some grey areas)
Comprises of groups and communities with differing degrees of organizations and goals
Maintains Democratic Pluralism and checks government (Look at slides for more exact meaning)
Democratic Pluralism
Civil society upholds democratic pluralism and mitigates the downsides of a representative democracy in upholding popular sovereignty
Social Movements
Collective action undertaken by people to achieve, resist or undo a social change
Bonding Capital
Connections within a group which helps to promote a sense of a common cause to sacrifice for which can increase group discipline & perseverance
Bridging Capital
Cross cutting coalitions to strengthen claim to popular sovereignty and widen social base
Linking Capital
Connections between 3 sectors of society (civil society, government, businesses)
Support of political elite vital in achieving change
